More about Arrowleaf Lake Flower Essence

Arrowleaf is about rising above. Found in shallow, still water, this sinuous aquatic plant grows out of the mud and blooms near the surface, its snowy white flowers literally floating above the muck. It can assist with gaining a clearer perspective, and is helpful when one needs to remove themselves emotionally or literally from a “murky” situation. It can bring us into alignment with our Higher Self, gracefully offering an expanded and more neutral viewpoint on life events. Within this same teaching is receptivity and willingness to see with new eyes.

Even if there is not a specific issue clouding up our experience, sometimes the demands of daily life are enough to bog things down and this essence offers support for reconnecting with the lightness, truth, and perfection of our authentic being. Additionally, the arrowhead-like leaves from which this plant derives its most common name, Arrowhead, represent precise direction and “hitting our mark.” With the enhanced perspective of this essence, we can accurately perceive our soul’s intentions and focus our aim directly and truly on our chosen path.

This is an essence of pristine Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced “pon-de-ray”) in northern Idaho as much as it is of the amazing Arrowleaf flower. My partner and I visit his family’s lakeside home here every summer that we can, to spend time with loved ones and soak up the exquisite magic and natural beauty of the area. Staying in the hobbit hole-like lakefront guest house, our inner clocks slow to a peaceful crawl as we enjoy the art of Being, indulge our inner children’s sense of wonder and imagination, and otherwise take a healthy dose of the medicine of Nature. The resonance of this peaceful space is present in this special and multi-faceted aquatic essence.

Historical use and healing lore

In addition to being a main food staple, many Native Americans (who referred to the plant as wapato) utilized the walnut sized, potato-like tubers that grow on the roots for medicinal purposes. These included the relief of headaches and indigestion, and to treat tuberculosis. Infusions made of the leaves of the plant also had numerous uses, such as a remedy for fever. The dried leaves would be fed to horses to treat urinary problems or sore mouths. Arrowleaf was also used as a love charm and for other esoteric practices! Its other common names include duck potato, swan potato, and katniss.
