More about Ghost Flower Essence

Encountering Ghost Flower in the woods is like stumbling upon a spirit, or some fey gathering whose dimension has momentarily crossed yours. The name Ghost Flower- and other common names including Ghost Pipe, Corpse Plant, and Fairy Smoke- are derived not only from its spectral appearance (due to its lack of chlorophyll), but from its ability to connect us with the otherworlds, and with the places between worlds. It can be helpful for those mourning the loss of a loved one, as it supports us in making peace- with the death, with the relationship, with ourselves. As it gets its nutrients by tapping into the mycorrhizal (mutual) relationship between fungi and trees, Ghost Flower has been considered a parasite, however another way to look at this is Oneness with the forest, plugged into a vast and sacred network beneath the surface of things.

Ghost Flower can gently yet profoundly provoke altered states of consciousness, making this essence very powerful to use for meditation, as well as for addressing insomnia. Conversely, it can also be useful for grounding one back into their body, particularly if they are under the influence of recreational substances. If one is depending on such substances for a false sense of spiritual expansion, Ghost Flower will gently but firmly correct this. (This correlates to its cane-shaped appearance when young, resembling a smoking pipe- hence its perhaps most common name of Indian Pipe.) Ghost Flower is undoubtedly an initiatory essence, however what you're being initiated in is between you and the plant!

Historical use and healing lore

The many medicinal gifts of Ghost Flower were utilized by Native Americans such as the Cherokee as well as by colonizers. As a nervine, it was used to treat convulsions, seizures, muscle spasms, mental disorders and other nervous conditions (leading to some more of its numerous monikers, such as Convulsion Root, Fit Plant, and Convulsion Weed). Other applications for Ghost Flower include a topical remedy for warts and other skin concerns, and the treatment of fevers, colds, and inflammation (including inflammation of the eyes, which earned it the name Eyebright). Historically, it was used as a substitute for opium due to its powerful pain-relieving properties, though interestingly, Ghost Flower gives us distance and perspective on the pain, rather than simply numbing it. This grants us respite while also allowing us to resolve and heal the root (emotional or spiritual) cause of the discomfort... Thus Ghost Flower teaches us to walk between worlds and be our own shaman.
